The history of The Marble & Stone Shop and it’s affiliate, John J Morton Co. dates back to the 1920′s. John Morton came to Charlotte in the 20′s from Scotland where he was an old world stone artisan. The story began as he set up a stone shop in Charlotte which he ran until the 1950′s.

In the 1950’s, the Standish family arrived in Charlotte from Bedford, Indiana – the heart of Indiana limestone country.  The Standish family was acquainted with Mr. Morton as a customer ordering Bedford Limestone. With this “Bedford Background” the Standishes bought the stone fabrication and installation business from Mr. Morton in 1960.

The Standish family continues to run The Marble & Stone Shop today. Broad knowledge of stone’s character as well as stone fabrication and installation has passed from father to son and continues today. The philosophy of The Marble & Stone Shop and the Standishes is prompt service, a quality installation, a fair price and an outstanding client outcome. With the dedicated help of career employees who have worked with The Marble & Stone Shop for decades, tens of thousands of homes and buildings in North Carolina and South Carolina showcase The Marble & Stone Shop’s quest for excellence. Customers from as far away as Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia have sought out The Marble & Stone Shop for their ambitious stone projects.
